Gerd Borchgrevink
The Beauty of Stoned Core Material
Artist statement: Through my abstract photographies you are invited into anthropocene manmade landscape, exposing amazing 300 million years old granite and marble formations found deep in Norwegian quarries and the mountain range of Fantiscritti, Carrara Italy. The photo series brings history an intimate and fresh contemporary expression which provides the audience with new consciousness about art and cultural history.
I feel my work harmonizing with object oriented philosophy. There is a shift in both art history and philosophy towards ecological argument for non human/non anthropocentric understanding of the universe and of man and nature.
I´ve been exploring natural seasonal lightshift´s impact on nature. I never know what awaits when I return to a spectacular scene, is it still there or has it been mined away by industrial diamond coated steel wires? Are we transported even further back in time? My photos show unique glimpses of evolution impossible to reproduce - forever gone.
My work revolves around natural light, materiality, tactility, sensation and silence. I enjoy working in the cross roads between pure abstraction and emerging symbols. When does abstraction become pregnant with meaning and how does language emerge to engage the audience?
