About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

This event will take place on October 26th at 5PM (Germany). The time indicated by Eventbrite should already be your local time. However, you may prefer to double check by clicking the time zone converter here.

Affect and rhetoric are the essential concepts in baroque music. Think of affect as a particular expression, and rhetoric is the art of conveying that expression. In this interactive lecture workshop, Teddie will be showing how ornamentation contributes to affect in baroque music. Besides being just another fancy way to play a passage, ornamentation also has meaning and serves a rhetorical function.

We will look at both German and French music and learn how to execute an ornament according to the affect required. In addition, we'll also learn how to add our own ornamentation that compliments the music. Both focused exercises as well as a variety of baroque flute music will be presented.

What you will learn:

  • Some of the basic ornaments in baroque music
  • Expressing affect through ornamentation
  • How to ornament in a way that sounds natural, stylish, and harmonious with the music
  • Increase your overal palette of expression and deepen your interpretation

While there will be a quick overview of the basic kinds of ornaments, this workshop is more focused on bringing out the expression in ornamentation. Both modern and historical flutists are warmly welcomed! BRING YOUR FLUTE.

Music and other materials for the workshop will be distributed around one week beforehand. The session will be recorded and all registrants will have access to the recording for 3 months afterwards.

Look forward to taking your playing to the next level!

What others say:

"Teddie's workshops are a fantastic learning experience! She creates such a friendly environment and explains things in such a clear manner that the workshops can apply to anyone at any level. Her knowledge of the Baroque era and her perspectives are inspiring and very valuable!" - Elizabeth Pogue, USA

"Teddie's workshops on French Baroque music are a rare gift! She fills them with pertinent research materials, and demonstrates passages from manuscript facsimiles. This is the real deal; in a few short minutes, students are learning how to make fine adjustments that transform straightforward playing into something nuanced and shimmering. Teddie's own playing is just beautiful, and the examples are always perfectly chosen. While I've a long way to go, these workshops have certainly helped my playing, and I would heartily recommend them to anyone." - Joanna Demers, University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music

"Teddie was very organized and inspiring. I would love to keep learning more and if I have the chance to do it in person one day. Thank you very much Teddie."
