About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours 30 minutes

This August, the Kiezsalon visits Neukölln’s contemporary art centre KINDL, a former brewery known for its distinctive industrial architecture. On Saturday, 9 August, we present Berlin-based ambient producer Ulla and Brussels-based composer Adriaan de Roover. This follows Friday’s program featuring Elaine Howley and Erwan Keravec.

Ulla is a Berlin-based musician and composer whose music features a vaporous blend of gliding electronics and electroacoustics, creating intimate and spectral soundscapes. Having made several albums since 2016, their most recent work, Hometown Girl, released under the alias U.e., embraces a more acoustic approach with clean-toned guitar, woodwinds, and piano. Stereogum described it as “devastatingly gorgeous”, while Pitchfork praised the “music so delicate it’s almost weightless, propelled less by a guiding hand than by the mercurial drift of air particles warmed by the first rays of the sun.”

Adriaan de Roover is a Brussels-based musician whose works integrate acoustic and electronic sources into amorphous, indefinably textured shapes. In 2024, Adriaan released his second solo album Other Rooms, a reworking of a 2020 performance. Inviting introspection and reflection upon the ‘what if’ questions of existence, its weightless melodies and precisely sculpted digital soundscapes included the track “Dank U”, of which Foxy Digitalis wrote: “Distractions glide through errant melodies and follow disintegrating guitar lines into an inviting void.”

The KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art is located in a former brewery in Neukölln, established in the early 20th century. The building, which once housed the KINDL Brewery, retains much of its industrial character, including a 30-meter-tall tower and 600-square-meter glass-walled brewery hall. The site now hosts rotating art exhibitions and performances, serving as a prominent venue for contemporary art.

The Kiezsalon is a project by Digital in Berlin. Curated by Michael Rosen and funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion. Presented by The Wire and taz, die tageszeitung.
