Bucksche Schweiz: Land of Castles & Sandstone

Brush off the winter blues to hike through one of the most beautiful, natural areas outside of Berlin. It’s one of the few nature spots to be designated with the ‘Schweiz’ moniker, and home to some of the region’s most prestigious nature that earn it comparisons to Sächsische Schweiz. Several lookout towers providing panoramic views across the area’s iconic, natural glass-rock formations, and deep lake features, and farms along the route, and a centuries-old schloss, all add to the historic and beautiful character of the protected area. The extensive walk is a great way of flexing off the winter and getting outside into nature, partaking in one of Brandenburg’s most stunning walks.

TRIP DETAILS

Meeting location & time:

• Option A: Meet in Berlin Central Train Station (Berlin Hbf) at 08:30 am on Saturday.
• Option B: Meet in Hosena Hbf at 11 am.

Note: The exact platform in Berlin Hbf will be advised the day before the trip in the whatsapp group for this trip. Please advise if you do not have whatsapp & can make alternate arrangement to keep you in the loop.

Finishing location & time:

• Option A: Berlin Hbf at 7:30pm
• Option B: Hosena hbf at 4pm

• Other Things of Note: Weather is temperament and can vary between. Rain jackets, rain trousers, and proper hiking boots are required.

WHAT IS THE PLAN?

• 8.30AM: Meet at Berlin Hauptbahnhof and leave at 8.45AM, arriving at Hosena at 11 AM.
• 12 PM: Visit Hohenbocka Schloss
• 1 PM: Climb Prossenberg Observation Tower
• 1 30 PM: Lunch Break
• 3 PM: Visit Senftenberg Lake
• 4 PM: Return Home

• 7 PM: Arrive in Berlin

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?

• Hohenbocka Schloss: The listed building and castle grounds were initially designed to resemble a fairytale palace, and is one of the region’s most visited complexes.
• Glass Rock Felsen: A striking natural rock formation similar to that of Sächsische Schweiz, iconic to the region constructed from the hardened glass sand that has been mined here for hundreds of years.
• Prossenberg Observation Tower: The 25-meter-high observation tower overlooks the Hohenbockaer Schweiz, providing stunning views of the nature below.
• Senftenberg Lake:It’s  one of the largest artificially created lakes in Germany, when the Niemtsch open - cast mine was flooded 50 years ago. Now it’s a protected natural habitat and recreational spot.

WHO IS THE COMMUNITY GUIDE FOR THIS TRIP?

Born in the UK, Dan has been residing in Germany for over 15 years, making the most of that time exploring the Bavarian Alps, Franken countryside, and riverside hiking trails. He also loves long-distance running, bike touring, and music, and plays in several bands in Berlin, and DJ's frequently.

He is currently working on his next book, Hiking & Drinking Europe, and is currently researching some of the best wine trails and brewery tours that Europe has to offer. His passions? Watching sunsets from Alpine mountain huts, and the sunrise across the Elbe River.
